Growing up on farms in Southeastern Ohio left us with a love and understanding of animals, as well as a deep connection with the land. Throughout our brief detour from the "country" (a 22 year stint with the Marine Corps followed by a little corporate time) we held on to our dream of someday returning to our roots.
In 2002 we began our search for the perfect country get-a-way. We were looking for that quaint little small town feeling - - with a whole bunch of country charm! After many ups, downs and dead ends, we finally found what we were looking for. Outside the small town of Halifax, Virginia we found a beautiful little farm that fit our dream. We planned our work - - worked our plan - - and Country Charm Farm was "born".
One of the main advantages of country living is the ability to grow and raise our own crops and livestock. The question that begged to be answered was, "What do we raise?" Giving consideration to the excellent health-related benefits of goat milk and its many by-products, goats became the logical choice for populating Country Charm Farm.
Then the challenge became, "Which breed of goat do we purchase?" After many hours of research, numerous farm tours, and the completion of a mentorship program, we overwhelmingly decided on the Nigerian Dwarf goat. Their small size, loving personalities, colorful markings, and pleasant temperaments made them the perfect choice. We purchased 12 registered Nigerian Dwarf goats from excellent breeding stock and began our journey as owners of some of the most entertaining, inquisitive little animals on the face of the earth. They are everything we hoped they would be, loving, pleasant, playful, gentle and attentive. And on top of all that - - they produce some of the most delicious milk we have ever tasted!
Social in nature, Nigerian Dwarf goats desire a lot of attention from their people - - and form close bonds within the herd as well. Nigerian Dwarf goats come in many colors and patterns - - giving them uniqueness that many other breeds do not offer. With each new birth there is that added thrill as we discover the unique design Mother Nature has given to each and every 2 lb kid!
Whether you are interested in owning a goat as a pet/companion - - or as a provider of delicious and healthy milk to drink or make cheese, butter, yogurt and ice cream - - you will find the Nigerian Dwarf goat an excellent choice.
Because of their size, less space is required for housing and maintaining them, making the Nigerian Dwarf goat wonderfully suited for the small farmer.
